Motivational interviewing (MI) is a very common approach used in the behavioral health field to support people in making decisions and changes to achieve their desired goals. However, there is limited information on how and why this approach can be utilized when working with members of the LGBTQ+ community. This two-part webinar series will offer mental health providers an overview of MI and how it can be applied to the LGBTQIA+ community. Across both webinars, participants will have the opportunity to practice applying these skills through a vignette-based activity.
In part one, Dr. McGeough focuses on applying MI to support the coming out process for LGBTQ youth. This presentation will include a brief overview of the principles of MI and past research about using this approach with youth and LGBTQ people. The presenter will discuss how tools of MI (e.g., Menu of Possibilities, Decisional Balance, Goal Attainment Scaling Tool, and Elicit-Provide-Elicit Framework) can be applied to supporting LGBTQ youth with the coming out process.
